PCC Joins Multi-Agency Operation Targeting Waste Crime Across Sussex
Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) Katy Bourne joined Sussex Police's Rural Crime Team during Operation Barley, a multi-agency enforcement initiative led by the Environment Agency aimed at tackling illegal waste crime and fly-tipping across the county.
The operation focuses on identifying and stopping offenders who are transporting waste illegally before it is dumped, helping to prevent environmental damage and reduce the significant clean-up costs often shouldered by local authorities, landowners and taxpayers. Alongside Sussex Police and the Environment Agency, partners including the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Chichester District Council took part in the operation, demonstrating the value of a coordinated approach to tackling waste-related offences.
Fly-tipping and waste crime continue to have a harmful impact on communities and rural environments across Sussex. The most commonly encountered forms of illegal waste include household rubbish, construction materials and discarded white goods. As well as damaging the natural environment, the cost of removing illegally dumped waste can place a considerable burden on local authorities and private landowners.
During the operation, PCC Katy Bourne observed first-hand the work being carried out by Sussex Police's Rural Crime Team and partner agencies to prevent, disrupt and investigate offending linked to waste crime.
Residents can play an important role in helping to keep Sussex clean and safe by reporting incidents of fly-tipping and illegal waste activity.

- Report it to your local council.
- Large-scale, hazardous or organised waste crime should also be reported to the Environment Agency.
- If you witness fly-tipping taking place and there is an immediate need for a police response, contact Sussex Police straight away.
- Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers.
