PCC Katy Bourne praises volunteers’ crucial role in policing and community safety

As national Volunteers Week (1-7 June) gets underway, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Katy Bourne is celebrating the vital contribution made by volunteers who support local policing and community safety initiatives across the county.

Thousands of residents in Sussex give their time freely, playing a crucial role in supporting police officers and staff, strengthening neighbourhood policing and acting as a vital link with the public.

Volunteers support policing and the wider criminal justice system in many ways, including as Special Constables, police cadets, independent custody visitors, and as restorative justice practitioners – as well as those who provide critical support to victims of crime, and many others.

Specialist volunteer groups, such as Neighbourhood Watch and Community Speedwatch, work closely with the police providing critical intelligence and sharing important community safety information with residents.

Marking Volunteers Week, which is a national celebration of volunteering, PCC Katy Bourne said: “Volunteers Week is an opportunity to recognise and thank the many volunteers across our county who give their time, skills and experience to support local policing.

“Whether they are supporting frontline policing, helping to make the criminal justice system more transparent, or providing reassurance and support to victims of crime, volunteers play an essential role in helping Sussex remain a safe place to live, work and visit.

“My Independent Custody Visiting (ICV) Scheme has recently achieved the Investors in Volunteers Award, the UK quality standard for good practice in volunteer management and involvement.

“ICVs play a vital role in safeguarding the rights and welfare of people detained in police custody and this award is a direct reflection of their professionalism and dedication.”

Throughout Volunteers Week, the PCC’s team is shining a spotlight on the work of volunteers – sharing their stories, showcasing the breadth of roles they undertake and highlighting the positive impact they make on local people and their communities.
