Sussex PCC statement on new Policing Performance System
Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne comments on the introduction of HMICFRS's new Policing Performance System:
"The introduction of HMICFRS’s new Policing Performance System is an important step forward in strengthening accountability, improving performance and ensuring the public receives the high-quality policing service it deserves.
“Sussex Police's assessment under the new framework is very encouraging. The force has been assigned the lowest of four escalating levels – Level One - reflecting the impressive improvement in performance in recent years and the effective leadership currently in place.
“This should provide reassurance to the public that Sussex Police is working hard to deliver a good service to communities across the county but I recognise that there is always more to do so continuous improvement will remain my focus in performance meetings with senior officers.
"Independent scrutiny of policing is essential. Public confidence is built not only on effective policing but also on the transparent and robust assessment of how police forces are performing.
"As Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) one of my most important responsibilities is holding our Chief Constable to account for the Force’s performance, on behalf of the public. HMICFRS plays a vital role in providing me with independent oversight, helping to identify both areas of good practice and areas where improvement is needed.
"I sincerely hope that this new system will bring greater consistency to the monitoring of police performance nationally.
“The public rightly expects the highest standards from policing and PCCs have a key role in driving improvement, championing transparency and ensuring forces are delivering an effective, efficient and trusted service.
"Where good performance is identified, it is right that this is recognised. Equally, where challenges exist, they must be addressed openly and promptly.
“Ultimately, this new system supports a shared goal: better policing outcomes and safer communities for the public we all serve."
