The Old Police Cells Museum
Preserving Sussex’s Policing Heritage
Step back in time and discover the fascinating history of policing in Sussex
The Old Police Cells Museum is now under the stewardship of Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne, ensuring its long-term future as a vital cultural and educational resource for the county. Katy is committed to preserving this unique heritage and expanding its reach to new audiences.
Located in the basement of Brighton Town Hall, the Old Police Cells Museum offers a unique glimpse into the evolution of law enforcement, crime and justice from the early 19th century to the modern day.

A historic setting
The museum occupies the original Victorian police cells that were in use from 1832 until 1967. These atmospheric spaces tell stories of Brighton’s policing past, including the tragic murder of Chief Constable Henry Solomon in 1844, the Mods and Rockers era and the changing role of women in the force.
What you’ll see
- Original Cells and Graffiti – Explore the cells where prisoners were once held, complete with authentic markings from decades past.
- Rare Collections – View one of the UK’s largest collections of truncheons and tipstaffs, alongside uniforms, memorabilia and artefacts.
- Historic Cases – Learn about famous local cases, including the IRA bombing of Brighton’s Grand Hotel in 1984.
- Interactive Experiences – Try on real police uniforms and immerse yourself in the stories told by knowledgeable guides, many of whom are retired police officers.
Educational and community value
The museum is more than a collection of artefacts - it’s a living archive dedicated to strengthening the relationship between Sussex Police and the public. It offers school visits, research opportunities and guided tours that bring history to life.
