HMIC: Consultation on Programme for Regular Force Inspections

HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) launched a consultation in relation to its new approach to assessing police force performance in England and Wales. This new programme of inspections, or PEEL (Police Efficiency, Effectiveness and Legitimacy) assessments, aims to assess how well each of the 43 forces in England and Wales:

• provides value for money (efficiency);
• cuts crime (effectiveness); and
• provides a service that is fair and treats people properly (legitimacy).

HMIC also made proposals in their consultation about the questions each force will be assessed against, the way in which they will be rated against each theme, and how this information will be published, particularly in ways that make it more accessible to the public.
