Survey on Engagement between Police & Crime Commissioners and Prison Governors

The National Offender Management Service are working on improving relations between Police & Crime Commissioners and Prison Governors with the aim of empowering both to cut crime and reduce reoffending in prison and the community.

The aim of this work is to highlight the ways that prisons can aid police forces in gathering intelligence and reducing crime as well as the vital support that Police & Crime Commissioners can offer to help reduce ongoing criminality in prisons.

The survey sought to gather information regarding the existing levels of engagement between Police & Crime Commissioners and Prison Governors, to better understand what kind of relationships exist, what can be done to improve this engagement and what benefits each party stands to gain from doing so. The following questions were asked:

• What involvement do you currently have with prison governors in your area? Do you feel that you are sighted on and engaged in issues relating to prisons?
• Could you highlight any examples of good practice in your dealings with prison governors?
• How might PCCs benefit by improving their relationships with governors?
• How might engagement between PCCs and prison governors be improved?
